What is catch rate?
Catch rate (reception percentage) is receptions divided by targets. It answers a simple question: when this player is thrown the ball, how often does it end in his hands? League average sits near 62–64%.
How the calculator works
Divide receptions by targets and show drops for context — a 58% catch rate with 12 drops tells a very different story from 58% with 3.
Common use cases
- Separating quarterback accuracy from receiver skill
- Profiling roles: possession receivers run 70%+, deep threats can live at 50%
- Fantasy scouting for target hogs who actually convert
Formula & caveats
Catch rate is role-dependent — downfield targets are simply harder. Average depth of target is the necessary companion stat before judging hands.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good catch rate?
65%+ is strong; possession receivers exceed 70%, while 50% is normal for deep-ball specialists.
Are drops included in catch rate?
Indirectly — a drop is an uncaught target. Enter drops separately for context.
Do throwaways count as targets?
Official scoring usually does not count obvious throwaways, but scorer judgment varies.
