What is usage rate?
Usage rate estimates the share of team possessions a player 'uses' — shots, free-throw trips and turnovers — while he is on the floor. It is the volume dial that gives efficiency stats their meaning: 20 points at 30% usage is a star line, 20 points at 15% usage is a role player having a nice night.
How the calculator works
USG% = 100 × ((FGA + 0.44×FTA + TOV) × (TeamMP/5)) ÷ (MP × (TeamFGA + 0.44×TeamFTA + TeamTOV)). Enter the player's line and the team totals for those possessions; the tool classifies the result on the standard scale.
Common use cases
- Trade/fantasy valuation: who absorbs the vacated usage?
- Identifying featured players on bad teams (empty-stats detector)
- Projecting role changes after offseason moves
Formula & context
League leaders run 32–38%. A jump from 20% to 28% usually costs a few points of efficiency — usage and TS% must always be read together.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a high usage rate?
30%+ is ultra-high (primary option), 25–30% is a clear first/second option, 18–24% is typical starter range.
Why multiply team minutes by 5?
Five players share the floor; the formula prorates team possessions to the player's minutes share.
Does usage include assists?
No — usage counts possessions ended by the player's shot or turnover.
