GAA Calculator

Goals against average from goals allowed and minutes played — the classic 60-minute normalization.

What is GAA?

Goals against average is the goals a goalie allows per full 60-minute game: GA × 60 ÷ minutes. It is the oldest goalie stat and still the one on the back of hockey cards, though SV% and wins carry more modern weight.

How the calculator works

Enter goals allowed and minutes — including relief and overtime minutes. The tool normalizes to a 60-minute game and adds era context.

Common use cases

  • Fantasy goalie category management
  • Comparing goalies across eras (with heavy caveats)
  • Tracking a tandem battle through the season

Formula & caveats

GAA inherits team defense — a .925 SV% behind a porous team can carry a 3.00 GAA. Always read it with SV%.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good GAA?

Under 2.50 is strong; under 2.00 is elite in the modern game.

Do overtime minutes count?

Yes — all minutes on ice count, including OT.

Why is GAA era-dependent?

Scoring environments differ wildly: a 2.00 GAA in 2015 and 1995 are very different achievements.
