True Shooting Percentage Calculator

TS% from points, field goal attempts and free throws — the efficiency stat the modern NBA is built on.

What is true shooting percentage?

TS% measures scoring efficiency per shooting possession while correctly valuing threes (worth 1.5× a two) and free throws. It is the single best box-score answer to 'how efficiently does this player score?' and the reason the league average now sits near 56% after decades in the low 50s.

How the calculator works

TS% = PTS ÷ (2 × (FGA + 0.44 × FTA)). The 0.44 coefficient estimates how many free-throw trips consume a possession (excluding And-1s and technicals). The tool also shows points per shooting possession for intuition.

Common use cases

  • Judging a 40-point night — 40 on 25 attempts is very different from 40 on 18
  • Fantasy analysis: volume on bad efficiency is a trap
  • Comparing eras where pace and three-point volume differ wildly

Formula & context

Above 60% is excellent, 65%+ is elite (Durant, Curry territory), and below 52% is a drag on even a high-volume offense. Combine with usage rate: efficiency on low usage is cheap, efficiency at 30% usage is a superstar trait.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good TS%?

League average is around 56%. 60%+ is excellent and 65%+ is elite.

Why 0.44 for free throws?

It estimates possessions used per free-throw attempt, accounting for And-1s that don't consume a possession and two-shot fouls that do.

Does TS% handle turnovers?

No — that is why it pairs with usage rate, which counts them.
