What does this calculator do?
It estimates the chance a team reaches a win target — the customary 10-win playoff line, or any number you like — by treating the remaining schedule as a series of 50/50 games and applying a normal approximation to that binomial distribution.
How the calculator works
Expected final wins = current wins + 0.5 × remaining, with a standard deviation of 0.5 × √remaining. The tool converts the gap between expectation and target into a probability via the normal CDF. At 6 wins with 8 to play, reaching 10 lands near 27%.
Common use cases
- Fantasy roster decisions — when to sell on a fading team's stars
- Reality-checking 'we control our destiny' optimism
- Understanding how one swing game moves the odds
Formula & caveats
Real games are not coin flips — team quality, rest and schedule shift the per-game probability. This model is the honest baseline before those adjustments.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why assume 50% per game?
Without team-quality data, 50/50 is the unbiased assumption; the model is intentionally schedule-blind.
Why does it hit exactly 100% sometimes?
When current wins already meet the target, or remaining games can no longer reach it, the probability is deterministic.
How accurate is a normal approximation?
For 4+ remaining games it tracks the exact binomial within a couple of points — plenty for fandom.
